North Tulsa’s Lacy Park will be home to a new mural this fall thanks to a grant from Carter Center’s Inform Women, Transform Lives campaign.

Founded by former President Jimmy Carter, the nonprofit Carter Center partners with cities globally to inform women of the rights and resources that are available to them within their communities. Tulsa was the only city in the United States selected to receive a grant as a part of the campaign’s fifth cohort.

The mural grant was awarded to the city’s Office of Financial Empowerment and Community Wealth (OFE), which oversees the Financial Empowerment Center programs across Tulsa.

At the June 9 Parks and Recreation Board meeting, center representative Kennedy Dixon described the mural as a chance to improve community engagement and promote financial empowerment for women in Tulsa.

A call for artist submission ideas will go out in July, and the Financial Empowerment Center will review the submissions with the Tulsa Arts Commission and the city’s Office of Public Art and Community Partnerships.

The city will announce the selected artist in August and plan for the mural to be finished by the end of October — in time for National Estate Planning Awareness Month, Dixon said.

The board unanimously approved the use of Lacy Park for the mural request.
