Broken Arrow Public Schools is joining the Tulsa roster of prep sports programs cashing in on NIL.

The district is partnering with Opendorse, a name, image and likeness company already used by Bixby Public Schools. NIL is a legal right to control the use of one’s image, including for commercial profit. It’s been available to collegiate athletes since 2021 and recently expanded to Oklahoma high school sports.

The BA school board unanimously approved the contract Monday, allocating $16,500 in district funds over three years to Opendorse.

It’s the same fee paid by Bixby, allowing students at both districts to keep profits when they agree to promote a product or service. It also pays for virtual NIL training for interested students and their families.

The Bixby online marketplace has been active for several months, and 20 students have taken advantage. Students charge $10 and up for appearances, social posts or other promotional material.
