Tulsans are preparing to hibernate as they wait and see just how much snow will fall this weekend. Find our full winter storm guide here

If you’re brainstorming how to pass the time, we’ve got you covered. We asked for ideas on Reddit and Tulsans answered.

Here are some snow day suggestions from your neighbors:

  1. Make a trip to your local library before the weather changes to check out new reads.
  2. Curl up by the fireplace or a portable heater with a cross-stitch, knitting project, paints or puzzles.
  3. Break out the blow-up mattress and turn the living room into a pillow fort.
  4. Video games are another go-to, backed up by board games and other acoustic alternatives if the power goes.
  5. Whip out a cookbook and start a ridiculously-involved meal. Flip back to your 2020 sourdough recipe, bake cookies, stay warm with chicken noodle soup and pot roast, or graze on barbecue for as long as the snow keeps you inside.
  6. Get digging and make a bowl of snow ice cream with clean snow, cream, sugar and vanilla.
  7. Others are abandoning Dry January, planning to cozy by the fire with Hot Toddys, mulled wine and beer. (21-plus only!)
  8. Oscar nominations are out and there’s no better time to catch up on the contenders you missed this year.
  9. Catch your kids up on the classics they’ve never seen. (Personally, I’m getting started on a quest to watch all 102 movies set in Oklahoma by the end of the year.)
  10. You can take up a little community volunteering. Redditors are planning to shovel driveways of older neighbors, pull out stuck cars, knit gloves for local shelters or take in foster dogs for the weekend.
  11. Get a very early start on spring cleaning. Catch up on that garage cleanout you’ve been putting off, start a never-ending cycle of laundry or dust all those nooks and crannies you usually forget.
  12. The city’s athletically-inclined, outdoorsy types suggest winter expeditions like cross-country skiing and trail walks. More power to you, but be sure to wear warm clothes and brush up on the signs of frostbite and hypothermia.
  13. If you’re taking kids out to sled, Tulsans recommend soccer fields. Safety first: Wear a helmet, check for obstructions hidden by the snow along your path and never sled head first. But if you don’t already have one, finding a sled may be tricky. ACE Hardware in Brookside put it plainly: “Out of snow sleds, sorry.”

For health care workers, snow days don’t apply. They’re prepping for long days, sprains and breaks from ice slips. Help them out and stay steady, if you can.

Of course, many are skeptical of Oklahoma’s fickle weather forecasts — some say they’re planning for 45 degrees and rain. We’ll see who’s right sooner than later.
