November kicks off with Día de los Muertos celebrations and continues with an annual health fair for Tulsa’s Latino and Hispanic communities. Here is our list of free or low-cost things to do this month.

Celebrate Día de los Muertos

Downtown-based Living Arts of Tulsa’s annual Día de los Muertos Arts Festival is from 6 to 11 p.m. Nov. 6 at 307 East Reconciliation Way. This is open to the public and free.

The arts festival, which is in partnership with Casa de la Cultura, will feature an exhibition of altars created by community members.

Martin Regional Library, 2601 S. Garnett Road, will have its community altar open to the public at the Hispanic Resource Center Nov. 1-6 for members of the public to visit and honor loved ones who have died.

Attend UMA’s annual health festival

Eastside-based UMA Center will host its annual 918 Health Festival Nov. 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Christview Christian Church, 2525 S. Garnett Road.

The health fair will feature free ways for people to check in on their well-being, including screenings for lung cancer, consultations with general practitioners and vision exams. Attendees can also receive flu shots and haircuts for men. Visit UMA Center’s Facebook page for a full list of services.

Connect with Columbus neighbors

The Flyer and The Oklahoma Eagle are hosting a Coffee and Donuts gathering for the Columbus neighborhood, located near Dolores Huerta Elementary, from 9 to 11 a.m. Nov. 7.

Attend a Greater Tulsa Area Hispanic/Latinx Affairs Commission meeting

The Greater Tulsa Area Hispanic/Latinx Affairs Commission meets at 5:30 p.m. every second Thursday of the month at City Hall, 175 E. 2nd St., 10th Floor, North Conference Room. This month’s meeting is on Nov. 12.

The commission is one of six representing different communities and is made up of 15-mayoral- and county-appointed volunteers. The group advises City of Tulsa officials and celebrates community members.

Earlier this year the commission launched a “playbook” explaining constitutional rights of restaurant owners and their employees “at risk of unconstitutional search.”

Meetings are open to the public and can be streamed online here.
