Some Oklahomans who lost subsidies for their Affordable Care Act Marketplace coverage this year might find a $500 check in their mailbox. But as the Trump administration issues these refunds, Oklahoma’s marketplace premiums are expected to rise again.

Premiums will be 16.5% higher on average for 2027, according to Liz Heigle, a spokeswoman for the Oklahoma Insurance Department. Here’s why those checks are landing in Oklahoma and what you need to know before ACA enrollment opens Nov. 1.

How ACA refund checks arrived in Oklahoma

The Trump administration promised refunds for ACA users who might have been overcharged this year. Those checks are now being sent out to 950,000 Americans in 30 states. Oklahoma qualified because the federal government administered the state’s ACA plans.

Individuals get $500, and families get up to $2,500, according to Heigle. You must have held coverage for at least two consecutive months and not receive any subsidy in 2026 to qualify for a refund. You can call Healthcare.gov’s 24-hour hotline at 1-800-318-2596 to see if you’re getting a check.

President Donald Trump said in a video on X these $500 checks could cover the insurance spike many faced. The Tulsa Flyer previously reported some Tulsans saw their monthly payment more than quadruple from $64 to $369 last year because subsidies were not renewed in the One Big Beautiful Bill Act.

ABC News reported the refund checks were primarily for ACA users who had incomes above 400% of the federal poverty level, which is about $62,600 for a single person.

The Flyer asked the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), which is the federal agency that administers the Health Insurance Marketplace/Affordable Care Act in Oklahoma, how many state residents might be getting checks and how many Oklahomans using ACA fall within that income range. CMS declined to comment.

Oklahoma is moving to a state-based exchange starting with 2028 enrollment. For the some 300,000 Oklahomans getting health insurance through ACA, there’s a small user fee built into your premium going straight to Washington, D.C. This change would allow Oklahoma to claim that money, as well as the power to lower such fees later on.
