Tulsa Public Schools says enrollment applications increased almost 9% this year.

The district’s initial enrollment window opened in January, allowing families to start their students in preschool or move them into a new magnet program. After the window closed Friday, TPS reported 7,363 applicants and 15,122 total applications Monday — higher rates than its first enrollment period last year.

TPS families will hear back in March if they were accepted or placed on a waiting list at their schools of choice. If their application gets the green light, they have up to two weeks to complete the registration process or lose their spot.

A second TPS enrollment window will open April 13. Preschool enrollment is open year-round.

Enrollment in Oklahoma public schools declined by more than 10,000 students this year, and TPS wasn’t immune to the statewide trend. The district is down about 1,000 students — from 33,572 last year to about 32,500 this year.

Several other districts are also in the midst of enrollment season, including Jenks and Union Public Schools. Early enrollment at Jenks opened Monday for pre-K and kindergarten. Early enrollment is open at Union for pre-K, kindergarten and 3-year-old students.
