This year, Mayfest looks a little different. After The University of Tulsa withdrew from its three-year oversight of the city’s largest annual art festival, the City of Tulsa took it upon itself to keep the tradition alive.
Earlier this year, it was announced that the festival would be moved to Mother Road Market to coincide with the Route 66 centennial celebrations. That event is set for May 15-17.
Mayfest: Roadtrip will connect multiple events throughout the month including two music stages: one May 29 at the Bank of Oklahoma Capital Cruise Tailgate and the second during the Capital Cruise car parade May 30 at the Meadow Gold Dairy sign at 11th and Peoria.
The weekend’s events will also include the auctioning of a rebuilt truck from Capital Cruise Grand Marshal Derek Bieri of Vice Grip Garage. The truck will be ready to drive in the Capital Cruise and will be auctioned off at the Bank of Oklahoma Capital Cruise Tailgate at 7 p.m. May 29. The proceeds will benefit Mayfest.
“Just like Route 66, Mayfest is central to Tulsa’s DNA,” Mayfest board treasurer Jen Alden said in a statement. “Capital Cruise is a wonderful opportunity to support Mayfest as it moves to its next phase of life, and we are honored and excited to see the proceeds from this once-in-a-lifetime auction go to a cause that all Tulsans can enjoy.”
Tulsa is aiming to set the Guinness World Record for the most classic cars in a single parade. Event organizers are still seeking drivers and volunteers.
