A proposed resolution to rename the Midland Valley Trail to honor a former Muscogee (Creek) landowner was removed from the Tulsa City Council agenda last week without public discussion.
The withdrawal comes amid conflicting statements between the Parks Board and the Greater Tulsa Area Indian Affairs Commission (GTAIAC) about whether the commission formally endorsed the change.
During the council’s Feb. 11 Public Works Committee meeting, Parks Board Vice-Chair Teresa Meinders Burkett told councilors that the GTAIAC had “unanimously endorsed and approved” renaming the Midland Valley Train Tuckabache Trail.
However, during its Feb. 17 meeting, the GTAIAC clarified that no formal endorsement had been made. Commissioners voted to draft a letter stating that the commission had not endorsed the renaming and would defer to the Muscogee (Creek) Nation, which chose not to take a position beyond providing translation of the proposed name.
With the item removed from the council’s agenda, it remains unclear when the renaming proposal will return for consideration.
The Parks and Recreation Board had previously approved the renaming Dec. 9, 2025.
