Authors Danny Boy O’Connor and Jimmie Tramel will launch their new book, “Staying Gold: The Oral History of The Outsiders,” at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Circle Cinema, 10 S. Lewis Ave. The event is free and open to the public.
The event, presented by Tulsa Press Club, will feature a Q&A session with the book’s authors in a conversation with club president Jason Collington. A book purchase is not required, though a limited number of books will be available during a signing after the Q&A.
“Opening the Outsiders House Museum (in 2019) sparked a wave of momentum that renewed the world’s love for the book and film and gave us the perfect moment to tell this story in the words of those who lived it,” said O’Connor, who worked with Tramel, a longtime Tulsa World journalist, to write “Staying Gold.”
This definitive account traces how S.E. Hinton’s groundbreaking 1967 novel for teens became a blockbuster film and one of the most iconic American stories of all time. Its Nov. 4 release follows shortly after the “Outsiders” Broadway musical debuted its national tour in Tulsa.
The book blends archival photography, museum artifacts and personal recollections from Ralph Macchio, Rob Lowe, Leif Garrett, Hinton, C. Thomas Howell, Diane Lane, late film producer Fred Roos (who assembled the star-laden cast of “The Outsiders”) and others to create a vivid and heartfelt tribute. More than 100 people were interviewed for the book, including the creative team of the Tony Award-winning musical.
The book launch will occur in the same spot that begins the complete novel version of Francis Ford Coppola’s 1983 film adaptation.
