General Assignment Reporter

Reports to: Deputy Editor

Position Status: Regular, Full Time, Exempt

The Tulsa Flyer is seeking a general assignment reporter to cover news and events in and around Tulsa. The general assignment reporter will report to the deputy editor and cover a range of topics that may intersect with other newsroom beats, with assignments determined by community needs and newsroom structure. This role requires strong news judgment, the ability to turn daily stories and write longer-form work and adaptability to the newsroom’s needs as we evolve.

The general assignment reporter will balance daily reporting on topics that affect Tulsans’ everyday lives with some in-depth, enterprise and investigative work, while keeping a strong connection to the community. Coverage should be grounded in our mission to give everyone in Tulsa the local news they need to live more informed and more connected lives. We encourage experimenting with innovative storytelling formats and engagement approaches while adhering to the highest journalistic standards.

We’re looking for someone who can take their reporting beyond press releases and meetings, learn the communities they cover and engage directly with residents to find the stories that matter most to them. As a community-driven newsroom, you’ll also be asked to participate in community events and forums as a representative of the newsroom, along with TLNI events throughout the year.

This role is based in Tulsa and is expected to work in person and on location around the city. Some evenings and weekends are required as news demands.

If you’re naturally curious, enjoy storytelling and have strong writing and reporting skills, this may be the job for you!
