Visual Journalist
Reports to: Managing Editor
The Tulsa Flyer and Oklahoma Eagle are looking for a creative, experienced visual journalist to tell Tulsa’s stories in vibrant, smart ways. You should be a visual storyteller, able to work in both stills and video. You should love the idea of getting into neighborhoods and telling peoples’ stories. You should believe that your images can go anywhere — on a website, in social posts, in various digital places and in a newsletter.
You’re not just going to shoot news conferences and portraits. You should have experience finding and telling stories in and about communities. You should have experience in a news organization or other organization with a high operational tempo. You should be able to work with reporters and coach them on their own photography. You don’t have to be an expert in video editing — but you should be willing to learn it. Reporting and writing skills are a must for this job. Remote pilot certification is a plus, but not required. If you don’t have it, we’ll help you get it.
You’re a teammate first and you are willing to step in when needed. You are an advocate in the newsroom for thinking visually. You hustle. You look at every visual opportunity — even the ones that could be boring — as a chance to do something new. You take critique gracefully and apply it. You understand the ethics and pitfalls of visual journalism.
