TULSA, Okla. – The Dream Center is changing hours of food give-away—and giving families more of what they need.

Feeding the People

The Tulsa Dream Center is committed to taking care of the must vulnerable residents of Tulsa. Now the ministry is changing its food giveaway program to include hot meals at the end of the day, instead of mid-day like many other organizations. This happening at the Dream Center West Tulsa Campus.

“A lot of families who are in need of food, they’re not able to get food because, again, they work during the day,” said Dream Center Program Director, Danielle Melton. “They go to school. So because of that, we said we don’t want people to not have the opportunity to eat, to get groceries, to get a hot meal.”

Where People Can Go

The Dream Center made these changes at the West Tulsa Campus, where Melton says individuals had asked for hot meals, at dinnertime, on Thursday evenings.

“So because we’re noticing a lot of the families are missing, you know, the opportunity to have food, we wanted to be able to be that one. You know that one community to answer that call,” said Melton.

They are also now including a new Community Lunch Hour, on Wednesdays for seniors and anyone else who would like a hot meal.

What Neighbors and Diners Can Expect

On Wednesday, the Community Lunch came with meatloaf, mashed potatoes and gravy, carrots and a roll. The chefs in the kitchen told News on 6, all of the community they serve can expect homecooked, fresh meals, just like family would make.

Chef Chad Cherry says it’s about treating people like they matter.

“Because food is dignity, right? Like food is a basic human right, like air and water. Everybody should have a right to food. Especially in a country like ours, there’s no reason for people to be hungry,” said Cherry. “If we look at simple things like childhood poverty, a school to prison pipeline, it can start with the fact the kids are going to school hungry.

As he plans to make the meals for Thursday nights, he’s keeping his “customers,” in mind.

“If we can alleviate some pressure from even a parent coming home and having to make a meal, they can stop here and get a hot meal. The only place in Tulsa that’s doing that, we want to do that. We want to provide that for them,” said Cherry.
