You’ve likely seen your fair share of personalized license plates while driving around Oklahoma, but there are several plates that never get to see the light of day for being “offensive to the public.”
In 2025, Service Oklahoma rejected 42 personalized plates, many of which were deemed “inappropriate” and “vulgar.”
Some are more obvious to spot like: “FUG*DUP” or “STROKIN.”
Others are a little trickier. Think “YGBFSM,” “OMWTFYD” or “QWK-AF.”
When it comes to those — requests that may use coded language unique to specific internet trends, or slang — Service Oklahoma has a dedicated team to make sure nothing gets past. In 2024, for example, more than 11 requests referencing the viral “Hawk Tuah” trend were rejected.
Some last year include political references to President Donald Trump. “MAGA,“ “’MAGA 24” and “FCKTRMP” all found themselves on the rejection list.
Oklahoma has some rules when it comes to getting the greenlight for a personalized plate:
- It must be a combination of a minimum of four letters and a maximum of up to three numbers, any combination of intermingled letters and numbers or between one and seven letters, or seven numbers.
- The only punctuation available is a hyphen or space. No other punctuation or symbols can be used.
- The Scissor-Tailed Flycatcher (the state bird) design is not available for personalized license plates.
- Any request that conflicts with the Oklahoma regular numbering system or one which has been assigned to someone else will not be approved.
In order to apply for a personalized plate, you can go to the OkCARS site where you type in your request to ensure it’s available. This doesn’t guarantee it will be approved.
